Brightside Report is committed to responsible, transparent journalism. These standards govern how we discover, evaluate, and present stories to our readers.

Accuracy

Every story we publish is based on reporting from a verified source. We do not publish rumors, speculation, or unconfirmed claims. When a story includes a factual assertion, we verify that it originates from a credible outlet before featuring it on our site.

Attribution and Original Sources

Brightside Report does not republish full copyrighted articles. We write concise editorial summaries in our own voice and always credit the original reporting organization by name. Every story includes a direct link to the original article so readers can verify our summary and read the full report.

Source Selection

We maintain a curated registry of 63 news sources, each assigned a trust tier and priority score based on track record, editorial standards, and factual reliability. Stories from higher-tier sources are given greater prominence. We regularly review and update our source list. See our full source list.

Story Discovery

Stories reach our editorial queue through two channels:

• Direct RSS feeds from curated sources that we monitor continuously for new content.
• Keyword-based discovery using targeted search queries across five categories: positive news, solutions journalism, scientific progress, human achievement, and motivational stories.

Both channels feed into the same editorial pipeline. Stories from trusted sources that meet our automated quality thresholds may be published directly; stories that are flagged for any reason enter a review queue for manual evaluation before publication.

Editorial Review

Stories are evaluated — by automated scoring or manual review — on multiple dimensions:

• Source trust — Is it from a credible, established outlet?
• Relevance — Does it match our positive, constructive editorial focus?
• Substance — Does the story have enough depth and detail to be meaningful?
• Freshness — Is the story timely and current?
• Originality — Has a similar story already been published or flagged?

Stories from high-trust sources that pass all automated checks are published through our pipeline. Stories that trigger review flags — such as integrity warnings, low source trust, or duplicate detection — are held for manual editorial review. Stories that do not meet our standards are set aside.

Duplicate Detection

When the same event is reported by multiple outlets, our system identifies likely duplicates using title similarity, source comparison, and timing analysis. Duplicate candidates are flagged for editorial review rather than automatically removed, ensuring that the best version of each story reaches our readers.

Source Diversity

We actively manage source diversity to prevent any single outlet from dominating our coverage. Our editorial system limits how many stories from the same source can appear on the homepage, in featured positions, and in any given category — ensuring a broad range of perspectives and voices.

What We Don't Publish

Brightside Report does not publish:

• Political commentary, partisan opinion, or campaign-related content
• Crime reports, disaster coverage, or fear-driven stories
• Celebrity gossip or tabloid content
• Paid placements, sponsored articles, or advertorial content disguised as news
• Content from sources that have been blocked for quality or reliability concerns

Independence

Brightside Report is editorially independent. We do not accept payment for story placement or allow commercial relationships to influence what stories we feature. Our editorial decisions are made solely on the basis of quality, relevance, and alignment with our mission.

We believe in full transparency about where technology assists our editorial process and where human judgment remains essential.

What Automation Handles

Automated systems play a significant role in our editorial pipeline:

• Story discovery — Automated systems scan RSS feeds and search results using targeted keywords to identify potential stories. This surfaces candidates for review, similar to how a wire service delivers stories to a newsroom.
• Candidate scoring — Each discovered story receives a priority score based on objective factors: source trust tier, keyword relevance, recency, description quality, image availability, and source diversity. This score helps prioritize the review queue — higher-scored candidates are reviewed first.
• Duplicate detection — Title similarity analysis, source domain comparison, and publication date proximity identify when the same story has been reported by multiple outlets. Duplicates are flagged for review, not automatically removed.
• Categorization — Stories are assigned to editorial categories based on keyword analysis and source metadata.
• Filtering and organization — Automated systems handle deduplication, scoring thresholds, and editorial queue organization so that the most promising candidates surface first.

What Humans Control

Human oversight governs the editorial framework and key decisions:

• Source rules and governance — Humans define which sources are trusted, assign trust tiers, and decide when to block or unblock a source.
• Trust standards — The editorial criteria that determine what qualifies as a Brightside Report story are set and maintained by people.
• Corrections policy — When errors are identified, the correction process is handled by the editorial team. See our corrections policy.
• System tuning — Humans regularly review scoring rules, keyword lists, and discovery parameters to improve accuracy and reduce false positives.
• Exceptions and edge cases — Unusual situations, source disputes, and editorial judgment calls are resolved by people, not algorithms.
• Review queue oversight — Stories flagged by integrity checks, low source trust, or other automated warnings require manual editorial review before publication.

Content Generation

Brightside Report's editorial summaries, key takeaways, and story angles are generated through a combination of automated extraction and editorial templates. The system extracts key information from original source articles and structures it according to our editorial format. Stories flagged for review may receive additional manual editorial attention. We do not use general-purpose generative AI chatbots to fabricate content.

Data and Privacy

Our automated systems process publicly available RSS feeds and search results. We do not scrape, crawl, or access private or paywalled content. We respect the terms of service of the sources we monitor.

Continuous Improvement
