Minnesota Youth Jumps Onto Runaway School Bus and Saves 18 Kids After Driver has Seizure.
Ebro Ahmed, a 27-year-old store worker in Saint Paul, Minnesota, jumped onto a moving school bus and stopped it after the driver had a medical emergency. No students were hurt.
A man in Saint Paul, Minnesota, stopped a rolling school bus on Monday afternoon after its driver suffered a medical emergency, CBS News reported. Ebro Ahmed, 27, who works at a nearby store, jumped aboard the Battle Creek Middle School bus and brought it to a halt.
Ahmed told CBS News he noticed the bus moving down the street at about 10 mph with its doors wide open and its lights flashing. He said that stood out because school bus lights normally do not flash unless the bus is at a complete stop. Nearby security cameras recorded him sprinting from the sidewalk and leaping onto the moving bus.
Once inside, Ahmed said, he saw that the driver was having a medical emergency. He said he had never been behind the wheel of a bus and went straight for the gear control to try to put it in park. He briefly confused the reverse and park positions, and the bus began moving backward. He then shifted into neutral and pulled the parking brake.
Saint Paul Public Schools said 19 students were on the bus and none were hurt. Ahmed said that when he looked behind him, the children were a little scared, were crying and had their phones out, getting ready to call police. The district did not provide information on the driver's condition. Ahmed said the driver was coming around but still groggy, so he let him rest rather than ask questions. By the time police arrived, he said, the emergency had passed.
Ahmed said he has no medical experience but credited his favorite television show, "Grey's Anatomy," for helping him stay composed. He said he "just knew to be calm and just think everything through." The district said a second bus later picked up the students and continued the route. Asked whether he felt like a hero, Ahmed said, "I feel like any person in my situation would have done the same thing."
Note: The headline calls the rescuer a youth, says 18 kids were saved and says the driver had a seizure. The page describes a 27-year-old man, says 19 students were aboard, and refers only to a medical emergency.
