Catherine Breed, a 33-year-old ultra endurance athlete from Marin County, completed a swim of nearly 900 miles along the California coast on Monday, Oct. 19, 2026. She came ashore at Coronado, near the border between southern California and Mexico. According to ABC News, she believes she is the first person to swim the entire California coast.
The expedition took 111 days. Breed started in July in Oregon, with a crew and two boats following her along the way. She told ABC News' Danny New why she took it on. "I grew up on this coastline. I love California. I love the ocean so much," she said.
Breed described a long list of hazards: storms, including Hurricane Rachel earlier in October, as well as strong winds, high waves, changing currents and sharks. She also encountered pollution, including balloons off the coast of Los Angeles. "It was almost like I couldn't win some days," she said.
Calmer days brought different company. Breed said she swam alongside dolphins, whales and sea lions. She took rest days during the swim, shared her progress with followers on social media, and organized and spoke with ocean conservation groups along the coast.
Family and friends waited on the beach at Coronado and cheered as she crossed the finish line. Long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad commented on an Instagram post recapping the achievement, calling it epic inspiration. ABC News also noted that Breed had swum the North Channel from Northern Ireland to near Portpatrick, Scotland, on June 30, 2019, when she was 26.
Note: The headline states flatly that she is the first person to swim the entire coastline. The page says only that Breed believes she is the first, and it describes the distance as nearly 900 miles.
